Cowes Week is the longest running, regatta in the world, having been held in early August since the first race started on the 10th August 1826.(except during the two world wars) The first race was for the Gold Cup to the value of 100 and was held under the flag of The Royal Yacht Club, now the Royal Yacht Squadron. There was a race the following day for prize money, a ball on the Thursday and a dinner and fireworks on the Friday.

Skandia Cowes Week is the largest annual sporting event in the UK after the London Marathon, with almost 1,000 yachts and 8,000 competitors taking part. The eight-day event, which has been running since 1826 is great for sailors and visitors alike, with an exciting race schedule and a packed social programme throughout the week. Even if you're not taking part. A visit to Cowes during the regatta is a must with it's great selection of shops, excellent line-up of live bands, superb choice of cuisine and carnival like atmosphere - plus on of the best sailing spectacles in the entire world of course!.

Cowes has long been regarded as the premier yachting centre in Britain and is home to the Royal Yacht Squadron, one of the most senior yacht clubs in the country. Cowes is split in two, East and West situated either side of the entrance to the River Medina on the Isle of White. West Cowes is the centre of activity and is where you will find the main facilities and yacht clubs. The two parts of Cowes are linked by a 'floating bridge' which is a car-carrying ferry.

Skandia Cowes week itself attracts competitors from many different countries adding an international flavour to the week. In true cosmopolitan fashion, yachtsmen from all over the world mingle with royalty at this prestigious event. HRH Prince Philip has been a regular participant for over 30 years with his close friend ex-King Constantine of Greece. The Princess Royal and Prince Edward are also keen sailors and usually take part during the first few days of the week. A great firework display takes place from the floating raft just off the Marine Esplanade. The best view is from the Green in Cowes and the event if free.
